Northern lights snowmobile tours in Ylläs: which evening to book

The short answer

With children, book Snow Fun Safaris: the cheapest and shortest evening, with a stop at a wilderness hut, and children from seven ride behind a parent or in the guide's sleigh. Without a car, Kylmämaa collects you from your accommodation in Ylläs. Lapland Safaris runs on three evenings a week, takes nobody under fifteen and is the only one that prints the price of riding alone.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. All three price per person with two people sharing a snowmobile. Only price is marked.

Where these figures come from
  • Snow Fun Safaris: The cheapest and shortest evening, with a hot drink at a wilderness hut and winter clothing lent. Children from seven ride behind a parent if they are tall enough, or in a sleigh behind the guide.
  • Kylmämaa: Collects you from your accommodation in Ylläs, two to a machine, and lends an overall and shoes. The one that prints the driver's liability. Needs at least two adults, and takes children from three.
  • Lapland Safaris: Three evenings a week with a snack by the fire. The only one that prints a price for riding alone, and the strictest on age: nobody under fifteen.

The three aurora evenings by snowmobile sold at Ylläs are short outings of two and a half to three hours, two people to a machine, with a stop to warm up. None can promise the sky, so the choice rests on the evening around it: who in the group may come, whether you are collected, and what happens if you are alone.

With children

Snow Fun Safaris is the one to book with children. It is the cheapest and the shortest, stops at a wilderness hut for a hot drink, and takes children from seven: tall enough ones ride behind a parent from their own group, the others in a sleigh towed by the guide. Kylmämaa takes children from three but does not say where they sit. Lapland Safaris takes nobody under fifteen.

Without a car

Kylmämaa collects you from your accommodation in Ylläs and lends an overall and shoes, and it is the only listing that prints the driver’s liability after an accident. It needs at least two adults to run.

For aurora evenings without a snowmobile, from a fire to a snowcat dinner, see northern lights in Ylläs. Daytime snowmobile rides are compared in snowmobile safaris in Ylläs, and what an aurora snowmobile evening is like in general is in snowmobile northern lights tours in Rovaniemi. The rest of the resort is on the Ylläs destination page.

What each evening costs per hour, and which one a family with small children can book, is worked out in northern lights tour prices at Ylläs.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What does a solo traveller pay?

It depends on the tour. Lapland Safaris adds 50 euros for riding alone. Snow Fun Safaris shares each machine between two people from the same group, so an odd number means one person books a single snowmobile, at a price the listing does not print. Kylmämaa needs at least two adults. A single traveller should book Lapland Safaris or ask before paying.

What if the snowmobile is damaged?

The driver pays part of it. Kylmämaa puts the self-liability after an accident at a maximum of 1,500 euros, with third-party and comprehensive insurance included. The other two listings do not print a figure on the parts of their pages that open without a date, so ask what the excess is before you sign on the evening, when it is too late to shop around.

On which evenings do they run?

Lapland Safaris lists Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at seven in the evening. The two GetYourGuide listings show their days only once you choose a date in the calendar. If you are in the resort for a few nights only, check all three calendars first, and book early in your stay so that a cloudy evening leaves you another try.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
