Reindeer safari price in Utsjoki: the figures behind the fares

The short answer

For two adults on the hour at the home herd, book it on the platform: its printed price is ten euros lower and it can be cancelled free until a day before. With children under twelve, ask the company direct, since its own terms give them 30 per cent off. For a sleigh ride with a family, the holiday village is the only company whose fares are complete enough to total before you ask.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Nothing is ranked: two of the four prices do not say what they cover, so a lowest figure would compare unlike things. The family total is worked out only where every figure it needs is printed.

Where these figures come from
  • Farm hour, on the platform: The hour at the home herd as the booking platform sells it: meeting and feeding the reindeer, with pickup in the village.
  • Farm hour, direct: The same hour booked in the company's own shop, under the company's own terms for children and cancelling.
  • Aurora Reindeer: day ride: About forty minutes in a reindeer sleigh, the farm and a hot drink, with clothing and a pickup in the price.
  • Valle: sleigh ride: Feeding the reindeer and a short forest sleigh ride, with clothing, transfers and a drink in the herder's lean-to.

Reindeer outings in Utsjoki range from 50 euros to 141, and the spread says less than it seems. Half the gap is what the price leaves out.

One hour, two prices

The hour at the home herd is 50 euros on the booking platform and 60 in the company’s own shop.1 Direct, the company’s terms take 30 per cent off for children under twelve and hold you to a week’s notice before a cancellation is free.2 So two adults do better on the platform, and a family with young children may do better direct, if the discount outweighs the ten-euro difference.

What the dearer outings add

Clothing, a sleigh, and time. Both sleigh rides lend a winter outfit, which the farm hour charges extra for, and they last about two hours rather than one. Set against a farm hour plus a hired outfit, the gap narrows.

The totals you can work out

Only the holiday village prints every figure a family total needs, a price for each adult and each child.3 The others leave out a child fare or the basis of the price, and a total built on a guess is not worth printing. Ask them for one in writing. The outings themselves are described on best reindeer tour in Utsjoki.

Questions people ask

What would the holiday village's farm visit by car cost a family?

Two adults and two children would pay 520 euros, at 155 for each adult and 105 for each child, for two hours that include the drive, the herder's stories and a hot drink by a fire. That is more than the sleigh ride from the same holiday village, and it has no sleigh and lists no clothing, so it suits a family that wants the conversation rather than the ride.

Do we pay a deposit?

None of the reindeer programme pages mentions one. The holiday village's booking terms, which ask for 30 per cent within 14 days and set cancellation charges from eight weeks out, read as terms for staying there, and its reindeer pages say only that bookings close at six the evening before. Ask whether those terms apply to an outing booked on its own.

Is the evening reindeer ride dearer than the day ride?

Yes, by eleven euros. The herding family's evening programme, a forty-minute sleigh ride in the dark with the farm and a fire afterwards, is printed at 152 euros against 141 for the same programme by day, with the same half-price rule for children under eleven. What the extra buys is the chance of the northern lights, which the page is careful not to promise.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
