The short answer

If you want the most hours under the sky for the money, the eight-hour small-group tour is the cheapest per hour here as well as the longest, but it takes nobody under twelve. With young children, the sleigh ride towed by a snowmobile is the family ticket: it takes children from two, charges them about half, and lists a toddler at no charge. The cheapest ticket, a snowshoe walk, is short and also adults and teenagers only.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Child fare None €59 (4–14), €0 (2–3) Not stated None
Two adults, a child of six and a child of three Not taken €295 €540 at the adult price Not taken

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person and the lowest price per hour. All four sell shared places priced per person. Lapland Safaris' child fares appear on its page only when children are added to the participants. Trafinari's family figure uses the adult price four times, because its listing shows one price and no age limit.

Where these figures come from
  • Safartica: snowshoes: The lowest ticket, with warm clothes and snowshoes lent, but a short night and adults and teenagers only. Per hour it is dearer than the eight-hour tour.
  • Lapland Safaris: sleigh: The family ticket: a sleigh towed by the guide's snowmobile, children from four at 59 euros and a child of two or three listed at no charge. Dearer in the first week of January.
  • Trafinari: campfire: Three and a half hours in a group of two to six, at about the same price per hour as the sleigh. Warm clothing is not included, and the listing gives no age limit.
  • Safartica: eight hours: The highest ticket and the lowest price per hour, in a group of seven at most, with a full refund if the lights are not caught on camera. Nobody under twelve.

A shared northern lights tour from Saariselkä costs between 89 and 199 euros a person, and the cheapest ticket buys the shortest night. Divided by its hours, the order of the four in the table comes out almost reversed.

What an hour out costs

Safartica’s snowshoe walk costs 89 euros for two and a half hours, 35.60 an hour. The sleigh ride and Trafinari’s campfire evening both land near 39 euros an hour, at 39.33 and 38.57. Safartica’s eight-hour tour, the highest ticket at 199 euros, is the cheapest hour at 24.88. Outside the table, Arctic Timetravels’ van chase comes to 46.33 an hour and Lapponia Tours’ reindeer evening, with feeding the reindeer and a sleigh ride, to 75.60.

What a family pays

The sleigh ride is the one tour in the table that sells child places: 59 euros from four to fourteen and nothing for a child of two or three. Two adults with a six-year-old and a three-year-old pay 295 euros. Trafinari and Arctic Timetravels show one price each, so the same family pays 540 or 556 euros unless a child fare is offered when you ask, and Arctic Timetravels does not take a baby under one.

With children of twelve or more, the snowshoe walk and the eight-hour tour open up: 356 euros for four on snowshoes, 796 for the long night. A private tour for up to four, priced per vehicle, starts at 860 euros on the private northern lights tours in Saariselkä.

What each tour does during the night, and which one suits cloud over the village, is compared on the best northern lights tour in Saariselkä, the evenings by snowmobile on snowmobile northern lights tours in Saariselkä, and the rest of the resort on the Saariselkä destination page.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can we bring a baby?

Not on most of these. Arctic Timetravels' van tour is marked unsuitable for babies under one, the sleigh ride takes children over two, and the snowshoe walk and the eight-hour tour take nobody under twelve. Trafinari's listing gives no age limit in our record, so ask it directly. With a baby, look at the private tours instead: Lapland Welcome's private listing says infant seats are available.

Is the price the same every night?

Not on the sleigh ride. On Lapland Safaris' January 2027 calendar, one adult, a child of four to fourteen and a toddler cost 177 euros on the dates from 8 January, but 206 on the 1st, 4th and 6th. The marketplace listings show a starting price rather than a calendar in our record, so check the price on your own date before comparing.

Do we need our own winter clothing?

On some. Safartica's snowshoe walk includes warm clothes, and Arctic Timetravels lends them on request. Trafinari lists warm clothing as not included and asks you to dress for winter, so a family without a set pays for hire on top of its 135 euros each. The other two listings do not say in our record, so ask before assuming the ticket covers it.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
