Private snowmobile tour in Utsjoki: how small the groups are

The short answer

Book the village company's Paistunturi drive and ask for a private date. Its groups are always small or private and cap drivers at four, so a party of two to four is most of a departure already, and it will quote for longer, tailored trips. A machine to yourself is another matter: the holiday village sells that openly at 300 euros against 225 when two share, but that buys a seat, not a private group.

The village company in Utsjoki writes down how many people will be on the trail with you, which is the first thing to know if you want a trip to yourselves.

What the promise says

It describes its snowmobiling groups as always small or private,1 and its Paistunturi trip takes at most four guests at the handlebars, sharing machines and taking turns, with anyone else riding in a sled behind the guide.2 A group of two to four is therefore most or all of a departure. What the page does not print is a price for booking the trip for your party alone, so ask for one.

A machine of your own

The holiday village prices this openly: 300 euros to drive a snowmobile alone against 225 each when two share one.3 That buys you a seat to yourself, not the trip to yourselves, and the page says nothing about how many others join.

Making it yours

Write to the village company with your dates and party size and ask for a private departure or a longer, tailored route. The two-hour trips are compared on snowmobile safari in Utsjoki.

Questions people ask

What happens to the rest of our group if more than four of us come?

The village company says additional people can join as passengers in a sled pulled by the guide's snowmobile, so a family of five or six can go out together with four driving and the rest towed. Ask whether the passengers' price differs from the drivers', because the listing prints one figure for the trip and no separate passenger fare.

Is a private trip sold anywhere near Utsjoki?

The nearest snowmobile trip sold as private that this site has recorded is a day on Lake Inari from Nellim, south of Inari village, which lists a private group and a car transfer from Inari at extra cost. Inari is an hour and a half from Utsjoki by road, and Nellim further on, so for most visitors asking the village company for a private date is the easier route.

Can a private trip go further than two hours?

The village company invites requests for longer, tailored snowmobiling tours, which is the closest thing here to a private trip built around your party. Expect it to quote for your dates, group and route, and ask what is included beyond the two-hour trip's pick-up, clothing, helmets and wilderness permit, such as food or a hut stop.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
