The short answer

If private means not sharing a machine, book any safari at the fell resort at the one-per-sledge price. If it means your group alone with the guide, ask Sallatunturin Tuvat for a bespoke safari, naming one of its routes, or ask Kola Extreme Safaris through its contact form. Ask either for one total, and for the damage excess in writing.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Your group alone Bespoke safaris on request Ask via the contact form

Nothing is ranked: neither company prices a private tour, so the table shows what can be booked and what has to be asked for. The cost of riding alone is on the snowmobile price page for Salla.

Where these figures come from
  • Sallatunturin Tuvat: Sells a one-per-sledge price on every safari and says it organises bespoke safaris to your wishes.
  • Kola Extreme Safaris: Runs routes from the village centre and takes enquiries through a form that asks for your group size.

In Salla you can book a snowmobile of your own on any safari, but a guide and a trail for your party alone has to be asked for.

At the fell resort

Sallatunturin Tuvat prints a price for one person per sledge on every safari, and says it also organises bespoke safaris tailored to your wishes.1 Name the route you want, from the two-hour run to Ruuhitunturi to the Arctic Circle day, and ask for it for your group alone.

In the village

Kola Extreme Safaris runs its routes from a base in the village centre, and its contact form asks for the number of participants.2 Its page does not describe a private tour, so say that is what you want.

Questions people ask

Could a private tour be timed for the evening?

The resort already sells an evening snowmobile ride, the moonlight safari, on which the aurora may appear. A bespoke safari is the way to have that evening for your group alone, or to add a fire and a longer stop, so name it when you ask rather than asking for a private tour in general.

What would a private tour cost?

Neither company publishes a figure. On the resort's shared safaris a sledge with two costs 220 euros on the shortest route and 378 on the Arctic Circle day, so a private tour for a small party will cost at least the sledges it needs, and probably more. Ask for a single total including the guide.

Who carries the damage risk?

Each driver's sledge carries it. The resort names an excess of 890 euros per snowmobile in an accident and the village company 1,000 euros, and a private tour will not change that. With two to a machine the pair share one excess; riding alone, each rider carries a whole one.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
