The short answer

Book Santa's River House in Ylitornio: it is the one visit near Kemi that reserves a time for your family and friends alone, with Santa and Mrs Claus in their riverside home. The Ranua cabin calls its meeting private but sells single places, so ask whether your family can have a departure to itself. For more choice, the private visits sold in Rovaniemi are the next drive out.

No Santa visit of any kind is sold in Kemi, so a private one means a drive. Three places within reach use the word, and only one uses it the way most families mean it.

The one reserved for you

Santa’s River House in Ylitornio, 68 minutes from Kemi, books a time for your party and nobody else: Santa and Mrs Claus receive you in their riverside home for stories, crafts, baking and an elf name for each child.1 The house’s own pages give the visit as an hour and a half and the booking page it links to as two hours, so confirm the length when you reserve.

Private in name

Ranua Resort, 82 minutes away, calls the meeting in its forest cabin private, and inside it feels that way: ten to fifteen minutes with Santa after a sleigh ride through the trees. But the places are sold one by one, up to eight to a visit, so the family next to you on the sleigh may be strangers.2

Private, and priced for it

Rovaniemi, 87 minutes from Kemi, is where visits are built as private from the start, in several forms and at prices that need turning into one figure for your family. Private Santa visit in Rovaniemi does that sum.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can grandparents and friends come to the river house?

Yes. The house invites you to meet Santa privately with your family and friends at the time reserved for you, and its booking page takes up to fifteen people. Adults and children from four pay the same fare there, and the youngest go free, so a large family party is priced by counting heads rather than as a group.

Can our family have the Ranua cabin to ourselves?

The resort's page does not say. It describes the meeting as private and heartwarming, but it prices each place separately and takes up to eight people a visit, so other families may share yours. Bookings go by email to the reception, which is the place to ask whether a whole departure can be reserved for one party, and at what price.

Are photographs included?

At the river house you can take as many of your own photographs as you like, but the official printed photo with Santa is not included in the booking. At Ranua, Santa poses for photos with the children, and the resort's page mentions no photographs for sale, so bring your own camera and a charged phone to both.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
