Santa Claus in Salla
Illustration photo: gingerbread figures in the snow, not from the Salla visit.
The short answer
Book it for a small, homely Christmas visit: a snowy path to Santa's post office and cabin, gingerbread to decorate with Mrs Santa, then time with Santa and a family photo. It runs only in December and January, so it suits a Christmas or New Year trip. It is priced per person rather than per family, so count heads before booking.
Salla has one Santa programme on sale, at Napapiiri Café on the Arctic Circle.
The visit
A snowy path leads to Santa’s post office, his small cabin and a traditional Finnish sauna hut. Mrs Santa serves freshly baked gingerbread, and each child decorates a cookie to take home. Then Santa himself arrives to hear the children’s wishes, and the visit ends with a family photo. Booked from Ruka it takes three and a half hours with the transfer; the listing does not say how long the visit itself lasts.
Price and season
The price is 105 euros a person, with children under three free, by the listing on the Ruka resort’s site; the café’s own page could not be read when we checked.1 It is sold only in December and January, from Monday to Saturday, and the café also offers it to a single family as a private visit.
Outside those months, Rovaniemi is the alternative, 150 km away by the regional tourist site’s figures:2 there you can meet Santa without booking a programme, as meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi explains.
The rest of Salla is on the Salla destination page.
Posio, an hour and a half west, has no Santa programme at all and a drive to Rovaniemi instead: Santa Claus from Posio plans that day.

Questions people ask
How do we get there?
The café is on the Arctic Circle in Salla, at Hautajärventie 414. The listing we could read sells the visit with transport only from Ruka, the ski resort to the south, so from Salla plan on driving yourself or arranging a transfer with your accommodation. Allow for winter roads, and aim to arrive a little before your booked time.
Can children take anything home?
Yes: each child decorates a gingerbread cookie with Mrs Santa to take home, and the visit ends with a family photo with Santa. Children can also share their Christmas wishes with Santa. The listing does not mention a gift from Santa, so do not promise one.
Is Rovaniemi an alternative?
If your dates fall outside December and January, yes. In Rovaniemi you can meet Santa all year without booking a programme. The regional tourist site gives Rovaniemi as 150 km from Salla, so it is a full day out rather than an evening, best planned around the visit.
