The short answer

If you have your own winter clothing and can reach the winter village, its self-driven 10 km ride is the lowest price for the distance and the lowest total for a family. Pay more only for what you would otherwise have to arrange: the car and the outfit, a lunch, or a team for your party alone.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per adult, the lowest total for two adults and two children and the lowest price per kilometre on the sled. Every ride is 10 km. A family of four is two adults and two children in each seller's own child band. Railakka's price is for the party, shown per adult for two.

Where these figures come from
  • Lammintupa: Self-driven from the winter village's own kennel, with a snack in a hut; you bring your own winter clothing.
  • Ruka Adventures: A car from the resort centre to the farm and a safari outfit are in the price, with snacks and a hot drink.
  • Ruka Husky: An hour on the sled and a three-course lunch at the kennel; no winter suits lent and no transport.
  • Railakka, private: The whole team for your party only, priced for two people with a surcharge for each extra guest.

The four 10 km rides around Ruka differ in price by €125 per adult, and most of that difference is what comes with the ride rather than the ride itself.

The same distance, four prices

Lammintupa’s ride from the winter village is the lowest price and the lowest family total, because you drive yourself and wear your own winter clothes. Ruka Husky adds a three-course lunch for €20 more per adult. Ruka Adventures adds a car from the resort and a safari outfit, and Railakka’s private ride gives you the team to yourselves, priced for the party.123

Longer rides cost less per kilometre

The short rides are dearest for the distance. Lammintupa’s 5 km costs €24 a kilometre against €17 on its 10 km, and Ruka Adventures’ 5 km costs €38.80 against €14 on its 20 km. Ruka Husky’s 25 km, at €11, is the lowest of all. If your party can manage two hours on the sled, the longer ride is the better buy.

Where you book changes the terms

The same Lammintupa 5 km ride costs €12 more on GetYourGuide than in the resort’s shop, and the extra buys free cancellation until the day before.4 If your dates might move, that is cheap insurance.

Questions people ask

Is a child's place worth booking separately?

Yes: every seller here prints a child price below the adult one, but the age bands differ. Lammintupa's runs from 1 to 14, Ruka Adventures' and Rukapalvelu's from 4 to 11, Ruka Husky's from 3 to 11 and Railakka's from 5 to 14, so a twelve-year-old is a child at two of them and an adult at three.

What happens if not enough people book?

The shared rides need a minimum: four people at Lammintupa and on Ruka Safaris' departures, two adults at Rukapalvelu. If the number is not reached, Lammintupa and Rukapalvelu cancel by four in the afternoon the day before and refund the price, and Ruka Safaris tells you by three. Railakka's private rides need no one else to book.

What does a long day on the sled cost?

Ruka Husky's 25 km ride, with two hours on the sled and a three-course lunch, is €275 per adult, the longest one-day ride we found around Ruka. It prints no child price and is recommended only for children over twelve. Its two-day trip along the border is €1,180 per adult, food, cabin and transfers included.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
