Santa in Ylitornio with kids: what parents need to know

The short answer

With a child of three or under, the Santa station lets them in free and so does the river house on its own site, although its booking page stops free entry at two. Both places say they can take a wheelchair, which covers a pushchair too. Plan a full day at the station and a fixed slot at the house, and bring your own camera to both, since printed photos cost extra.

Ylitornio’s two Santa visits count children differently, and one of them does not quite agree with itself.

Who goes free

The Santa station lets children up to three in free.1 The river house’s own site says the same for children of three and under,2 while its booking page charges nothing only up to two and the full fare from four.3 With a three-year-old, ask the house which rule applies before you pay.

Pushchairs and wheelchairs

The station describes itself as wheelchair-accessible, and the house’s booking page says it can take both pushchairs and wheelchairs. The station’s outdoor snow games are the exception, since they happen in the snow.

How long to allow

The station sells a day and you set your own pace; the house runs to a reserved slot of an hour and a half or two hours, depending on which of its pages you read. Bring your own camera to both, because the printed photographs are extras. What each costs for a whole family is on Santa Claus price in Ylitornio.

Questions people ask

Can my child sit on Santa's lap?

At the river house, yes: its own page says guests can sit on his lap and tell Santa their wishes and secrets. The station's pages describe meeting Santa as part of the day without going into that detail. If your child is shy, the house's reserved time is the gentler setting, since there is no queue of other families waiting behind you.

What can the children do besides meeting Santa?

At the station the day ticket covers gingerbread decorating, crafts, the reindeer and outdoor snow games, and a Creative Hour workshop costs 15 to 18 euros extra. At the river house the visit includes crafts to take home, games, stories and Mrs Claus's baking, and the booking page mentions indoor snowballs for children. Both keep children busy for longer than the meeting itself.

How do we get there with small children?

By car in practice. The station's own site says transport can be arranged by contacting it but prints no details, and the river house gives its address, Niurontie 15, without offering a pick-up. Ylitornio is 49 minutes from Tornio and about an hour and a half from Rovaniemi by this site's measurements, so allow for a car seat and a snack for the road.
