The short answer

Two adults sharing one machine with two children of three to eleven pay 270 euros for the one-hour ride and 420 for the two hours to the fell top, rising to 580 for the longest food ride. Driving alone adds 20 to 40 euros per adult. Gear, guide and insurance are included. The town resort's ride has no published price, so ask it for the same family total before comparing.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

First ride, 1 hFell top, 2 hAurora night, 2.5 hFinnish food, 3.5 h
Adult sharing a machine €95 €140 €155 €190
Adult alone €125 €180 €195 €210
Child 3 to 11 €40 €70 €70 €100
2 adults sharing + 2 children €270 €420 €450 €580

All figures are the fell company's own, per seat. No row is ranked: the rides differ in length and in what they include, so a lower price buys a different ride rather than the same one for less.

Where these figures come from
  • First ride, 1 h: The one-hour introduction at Suomutunturi, with driving instruction before you set off.
  • Fell top, 2 h: Two hours to the top of Suomutunturi with coffee made over a fire at the summit.
  • Aurora night, 2.5 h: The fell top after dark, with sausages at a lean-to and hot juice by the fire.
  • Finnish food, 3.5 h: Twenty-four kilometres to a pond for Karelian pies, squeaky cheese, cloudberry jam and glögi.

The Suomutunturi list prices every seat separately, which is what makes a family’s total possible to work out before calling anyone.1

What the price covers

Gear, the guide and insurance, on every ride. The company runs a ride for two people or more and keeps the right to change the programme and the prices. It prints no cancellation terms, so ask for them in writing with the booking.

The solo question

Sharing a machine is how the price is built. Driving alone adds 20 to 40 euros per adult depending on the route, and it is the only supplement on the list.

The missing price

The resort in town sells a two-hour ride with a full outfit and no published figure. Ask it for a family total on the same terms before you choose. The rides themselves are compared on snowmobile safari in Kemijärvi.

Questions people ask

Is anything extra on top of the price?

The fell company says the price includes the gear, the guide and insurance, and adds that it reserves the right to change the programme and the price list. It does not mention a deposit, an insurance excess or fuel as separate items. Ask about the excess in particular, since that is what you would pay if a machine were damaged, and it is not on the page.

Where do we book, and is it cheaper anywhere else?

The fell rides are booked from the safari company's own page; none of them appeared on the booking platforms when this site surveyed them, so there is no second price to compare against. The town resort's ride can be asked about directly or through a hotel in town that books it, and neither prints a figure.

What would two adults driving separately pay?

Twice the solo price: 250 euros for the one-hour ride, 360 for the fell top, 390 for the aurora night, 400 for the Käsmäjoki route and 420 for the food ride. Against two adults sharing one machine, that is 60 to 80 euros more for the pair, which is the price of each having the handlebars for the whole ride.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
