The short answer

With children of three to eleven, the Suomutunturi ride has a published child fare and puts two or three people on one team, which suits a family taking turns. The farm outside town has child fares too, and a shorter four-kilometre ride, but no stated age and a 14-kilometre trip there. Avoid the platform's farm visit with under-fours: it does not take them.

For a family, the husky rides around Kemijärvi divide by what they say about children rather than by how far they go.

Suomutunturi: a fare for three to eleven

The fell resort prices children of three to eleven at 90 euros for five kilometres and 120 for ten, and puts two or three people on one team, so a parent and child ride together.1

The farm outside town: fares without an age

The farm booked through a hotel in town has child fares on both its rides, but does not say what age counts as a child. It is about 14 kilometres out, with transport for an extra charge.2

The platform’s farm visit: four and over

The farm visit on the booking platform does not take children under four and prints no child fare, so ask what a four-year-old pays before you book. Its details are on husky safari in Kemijärvi.

Questions people ask

Does anyone lend winter clothing for children?

None of the husky pages says so. The Suomutunturi husky page and the farm's page list no clothing, and the platform's farm visit mentions none. Dress children in their own warmest layers, boots and mittens, and ask when you book whether a snowsuit can be borrowed; the resort in town lends a full outfit on its snowmobile ride, so it may do the same for dogs.

Can my child drive the sled?

At Suomutunturi the page says riders learn to drive the sled, and two or three people share a team, so a parent and child can take turns under the guide's eye; it sets no age for driving. The resort in town calls its long route self-drive and sets no age either. Ask before promising a child the reins, especially a young one.

How long can small children manage?

The shortest rides are the platform's farm visit at an hour and a half in total and the four-kilometre farm ride, whose length in time is not given. Suomutunturi's rides last one to three hours depending on the distance and programme. For children under six, start with the shortest you can book and keep the longer run for a second day.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
