Reindeer safari price from Kemijärvi: town or a drive

The short answer

In town you pay for convenience: 185 euros a head for two hours with transport and thermal gear. Drive 46 minutes towards Pyhä and a reindeer farm visit costs 130 or 163 euros a head, the dearer one with transfers and a thermal outfit included. In Salla, the long farm safari costs 334 euros for two sharing a sledge, the best value per hour here. No listing gives a child fare, so family totals need a question first.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person and the lowest total for two adults. All four price per person, the Salla safari as half of the price for a shared sledge. The two-adult row multiplies the published fare; no listing gives a child fare.

Where these figures come from
  • Jauri Resort, Kemijärvi: Two hours in town with a sled trip, lasso and fire, transport from town and thermal gear included.
  • Kairankutsu, Kopara: About an hour and a half at the Kopara reindeer park near Pyhä, with a sledge safari the title puts at an hour.
  • Lapland Safaris, Luosto: An hour and three quarters with a herder near Luosto, with transfers and a thermal outfit in the price.
  • Sallatunturin Tuvat: Five to six hours and about seventy kilometres to a wilderness farm, priced by the sledge.

The price of a reindeer outing near Kemijärvi says as much about the transport as about the reindeer.

Paying for convenience

The outing in town is the dearest per head and the only one that collects you in Kemijärvi. The two visits towards Pyhä cost less, but one of them expects you at the park and the other includes transfers without saying from where.

Paying by the sledge

Sallatunturin Tuvat prices its farm safari per sledge: two people share one for 334 euros, and one person alone pays 218.1 It is the longest outing here by several hours, which is why it costs the least per hour for two.

Questions people ask

Can we cancel if plans change?

The Kemijärvi outing, sold on GetYourGuide, can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before the start. The Kopara visit is sold on Viator; its cancellation terms are not in this site's record, so check them on the listing. The Luosto visit and the Salla farm safari are sold on the operators' own sites, whose terms this site has not recorded, so read them before paying.

Is the Salla Wilderness Park safari cheaper?

Its listing gives 116 euros for three hours of driving your own reindeer, but without saying whether that is per person, per sleigh or per group, so it cannot be set against the others fairly. If the park confirms it is per person, it would be the cheapest per head of the outings here; ask before building a budget around it.

Is any food included?

Two of the four say so. The Kemijärvi outing includes a warm cup of local berry juice and a snack by the fire, and the Salla farm safari a soup lunch and black-pot coffee in a Lapp hut, which matters on a day of five to six hours. Neither the Kopara visit nor the Luosto visit mentions food in this site's records, so bring something for children on those.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
