The short answer

A couple who can reach the safari house should book on the booking platform: 125 euros each, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Pay the travel agency's 145 if you want to be collected from your hotel, or if you have children aged three to eleven, whom it prices at 95; but book it only once your dates are fixed, because cancelling inside two weeks costs the full price. Treat the lower figure in the tourism database as something to ask about, not a price.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

On the booking platformThrough the Kemi travel agency
Adult €125 – the lower adult price €145
Child Not stated €95 (3–11)
Getting to the farm From the safari house From your Kemi hotel
From Tornio or Haparanda Make your own way +€25 a person
A couple pays €250 – the lower total for two adults €290
Cancelling inside 14 days Free until 24 h before Full price

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lower adult price and the lower total for two adults. The same visit through two sellers. Only the adult price and the couple's total are marked; the child fare and the pick-up exist on one side only, so they cannot be ranked.

Where these figures come from
  • On the booking platform: The safari company's farm visit sold on the booking platform: meet at the safari house, winter clothing lent, free cancellation until the day before.
  • Through the Kemi travel agency: The same visit sold by a Kemi travel agency with the hotel pick-up, a helmet in the clothing and a child fare, paid in full at confirmation.

One reindeer afternoon is sold from Kemi, and the figure you see for it depends on where you look.

What the 20 euros buy

The booking platform sells the visit at 125 euros a person, meeting at the safari house. A Kemi travel agency sells the same afternoon at 145.1 The difference buys two things the platform does not print: collection from your hotel in Kemi, and a fare of 95 euros for children aged three to eleven. For a couple who can walk to the safari house, the platform is 40 euros cheaper. For a family of two adults and two children, the agency’s 480 euros is the only total that can be worked out.

What it costs to change your mind

This is where the two really differ. The platform refunds you in full up to 24 hours before. The agency takes the whole amount when the booking is confirmed, keeps 10 per cent if you cancel more than 31 days ahead, half between 30 and 14 days, and everything after that.

The lower figure

The national tourism database lists the same visit from 60 euros, for 90 minutes.2 Neither the database nor the operator’s own page explains the figure, and no seller we found offers the visit at that price, so ask the safari company before counting on it. What the afternoon includes is on reindeer farm from Kemi.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

We are staying in Tornio. What does the visit cost us?

On the booking platform, the same 125 euros a person, but you get yourselves to the safari house in Kemi, 21 minutes away. Through the travel agency, 145 euros plus 25 a person for the return transfer from Tornio or Haparanda, so 170 each. For a couple without a car that is 340 euros against 250 plus whatever the trip to Kemi and back costs you; the difference is the price of being driven.

How is the payment taken?

The booking platform refunds you in full if you cancel more than 24 hours before, so paying early costs you nothing there. The travel agency sends a pro forma invoice when the booking is confirmed and asks for the whole amount; the booking only counts once it is paid, and it may cancel a booking that is not paid by the due date. Keep that in mind if you book through the agency weeks ahead.

Is there anything cheaper within reach?

A sleigh ride without the rest of the programme is. The reindeer business in Ylitornio, 68 minutes from Kemi, sells a half-hour ride at 68.44 euros an adult and 48.43 a child aged four to fourteen. It has no feeding or lasso lesson and needs a car, and a winter clothing set is not included, but for someone who only wants to ride behind a reindeer it costs about half the Kemi visit.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
