Private snowmobile tour in Posio: what comes closest

A snow-covered man rides a white snowmobile through powder at dusk, with spruces behind him.

Riding alone through fresh snow is what a rental offers, and why it is only for experienced riders.

The short answer

Nothing sold near Posio is a private guided snowmobile tour with a price. If private means no other guests and you are experienced, rent a machine and ride Posio's routes yourselves. If it means a machine to yourself with a guide, book a solo seat on a Kemijärvi or Salla safari. If you want a guide for your group in Posio, ask Himmerki, which the tourist office names.

No private guided snowmobile tour is priced in Posio or at the neighbours within an hour and a half. Three things come close.

A machine to yourselves

A rental near Posio costs 350 euros a day, with 200 kilometres included and a 1,300-euro deductible in an accident.1 Nobody else is there because there is no guide either: it is private in the plainest sense, and only for riders who can look after themselves.

A guide for your group

The Posio tourist office names Holiday Village Himmerki for guided snowmobile safaris, with a phone number and no price.2 It is the only local route to a guide, and it starts with a call.

A seat of your own next door

Kemijärvi and Salla sell safaris where one person can take a machine alone for a supplement. You share the guide and the trail with the day’s group.

The shared safaris themselves are compared in the best snowmobile tour from Posio.

Questions people ask

What does a solo seat cost next door?

On the Suomutunturi safaris in Kemijärvi, riding alone costs between 20 and 40 euros more than sharing a machine, depending on the route: 180 against 140 on the summit ride, 200 against 170 to the Käsmäjoki. In Salla the Ruuhitunturi ride is 139 euros alone against 110 each for two sharing. Other guests may still be on the same safari.

What do we need to rent a snowmobile in Posio?

The rental listing prints the price, the included kilometres and the deductible, and nothing about licences or age. Elsewhere in the region the safari companies ask drivers to be eighteen with a car driving licence, so assume the same and ask the rental before you travel. Bring or borrow proper winter clothing and a helmet, since the listing does not include them.

Can we buy a day of freeriding in Posio?

The local common forest sells day permits for freeriding in two areas, Koro and Voho, at 30 euros a day, with about seventy kilometres of marked trails and riding off them allowed where it does no damage, according to the tourist office. That is a permit for your own machine or a rental, not a guided tour.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
