Northern lights in Pyhä: which evening to book

The short answer

Choose by who is coming and what you want to do while you wait, because none of these tours moves to find clear sky. With young children, the Monday talk and short walk from Luosto takes all ages. For a real walk in the national park, book the snowshoe trek. For a warm place to retreat to, the ranch by Lake Pyhäjärvi keeps its saloon open throughout. The zipline course is for adults and teenagers who want an adventure first and the sky second.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. All four price per person. Only price is marked: the evenings differ in kind, and none of them can promise the lights.

Where these figures come from
  • Lapland Safaris: talk and walk: An evening that starts indoors with a talk and radio signals from space, then walks out to a viewpoint with a fire. The cheapest, and the only listing that says it takes all ages, but it runs on Mondays only, from the end of December.
  • Lapland Safaris: snowshoes: A proper walk: snowshoes into the national park at night, with a juice and photo break and a thermal outfit lent. Six evenings a week, twelve and over.
  • LuckyRanch: ranch and lake: Snowshoes past the ranch's horses to a frozen lake, with a warm saloon to retreat to whenever the cold wins. The gentlest evening for anyone who worries about the cold.
  • Pyhäkuru: zipline by headlamp: A climbing and zipline course on the fell by headlamp, with the sky as a bonus. Afternoon sessions, fifteen and over, and no winter clothing lent.

The aurora tours sold in Pyhä-Luosto are short and close to home. None of the four in the table drives off to hunt for clear sky; each goes out on foot, or on a wire, near one of the two villages, and fills the wait with something else. That makes the choice simple: pick the evening you would enjoy with an empty sky, and treat the lights as a bonus.

With young children

Lapland Safaris’ Monday evening in Luosto is the one for families. It starts indoors with a talk about the aurora and radio signals from space, then walks out towards a viewpoint with a fire. It takes all ages and is the cheapest, but it runs once a week and only from the end of December.

For a walk in the park

Lapland Safaris’ snowshoe trek goes into Pyhä-Luosto National Park six evenings a week, with a break for juice and photographs and a thermal outfit lent. It is for ages twelve and over, and it is the one that takes you into the national park on foot.

For a warm place to wait

LuckyRanch, by Lake Pyhäjärvi near Pyhä, takes you on snowshoes past its horses and other animals to the frozen lake, and keeps its saloon open throughout. For anyone who feels the cold, knowing there is a warm room a few steps away changes the evening.

For an adventure first

The adventure park on Pyhä fell sells a zipline and climbing course by headlamp in the afternoon, with the aurora possible overhead. It is for fifteen and over, not for anyone afraid of heights, and the park lends no winter clothing.

Why the hour of the night matters more than the place for seeing the aurora is explained in the Rovaniemi northern lights guide, and all of it applies here. The rest of the area is on the Pyhä-Luosto destination page.

What each aurora evening costs per hour, and what a family with children of different ages pays, is worked out in northern lights tour prices in Pyhä-Luosto.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Is there an aurora tour by snowmobile?

Yes. Lapland Safaris sells a three-hour evening safari by snowmobile from Luosto on Thursdays and Saturdays, at 184 euros per person, with sausages and drinks by a fire. Two adults share a machine and children over two ride in a sled behind the guide. It is listed under the table. Like the four in the table, it heads into the wilderness near Luosto rather than chasing clear sky.

When is the zipline tour dark enough for the aurora?

The adventure park lists its headlamp sessions at two and four in the afternoon during the snow season, and its listing says the aurora cannot be guaranteed. The display tends to come later in the evening than that, so book it as a headlamp climbing adventure with a chance of the lights rather than as an aurora tour, and go out again after dark if the forecast is good.

What should we wear?

More than you think, because these tours involve standing still. Lapland Safaris lends a thermal outfit on its snowshoe trek and has overalls available on its Monday walk. The ranch provides snowshoes and a warm saloon but asks you to bring warm underlayers. The adventure park does not lend winter clothing. Wool next to the skin and a proper hat matter more than the outer layer.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
