The best northern lights tour in Levi

The short answer

Choose by the night you are planning, not by a ranking. If the forecast is cloudy, book the long chase that keeps driving until it finds clear sky, because under cloud distance is what changes your odds. On a budget, the campfire evening is the cheapest here. With children over three, the heated sleigh keeps everyone seated and warm. If you want to drive, pick a snowmobile evening.

No tour in Levi can put the aurora in the sky. What the tours sell is the evening around the wait, and they differ enough that the best one depends on the night you are planning. Here is one pick for each situation, with the reason.

When the forecast is cloudy

Book Arctic GM Experiences’ group chase, at 199 euros a person the dearest of the shared tours on this page. What the price buys is distance: the listing promises unlimited mileage and time, typically six to ten hours, for eight people at most. Why that matters under cloud, and what its refund does and does not cover, is argued on the northern lights in Levi. A group that wants the same chase to itself can book the private version at 1,700 euros for up to eight.1

On a tight budget

Safartica’s campfire evening is the cheapest of the aurora tours on this page, at 92 euros a person. It lasts three hours, about two of them outdoors, and winter clothing, a grilled sausage and hot drinks are in the price. It waits in one place, so it is a good buy on a clear night and a poor one under cloud.

Lapland Safaris’ snowshoe walk, sold on its own site at 101 euros, costs nearly the same and adds a walk to the waiting. It starts at half past seven, is rated moderate, and takes nobody under 12.2

With children

From the age of three, the heated sleigh is the pick. Lovimainas seats up to eight people under a plexiglass roof for three hours at 99 euros a person, so a child can watch the sky from a seat rather than standing in the cold. At that per-person price a family of four pays 396 euros; the listing shows one price, so ask whether a child fare applies. It lists children under three as unsuitable.

With a baby or toddler, the sleigh is out and the snowshoe walk starts at 12. Safartica’s campfire sets no lower age, but its listing asks parents to weigh the late hour and the two hours outdoors.

For a family that wants more to the evening than the sky, Northern Lights Safaris’ snow village visit picks you up from your accommodation, includes the entrance tickets and stays longer if the aurora appears. It costs 119 euros a person, 476 euros for four at that price, and winter clothing is not included.

For photographs

Kotona Lapland’s private tour brings a professional photographer for a photo shoot with the sky behind you. It costs 750 euros for up to four people, which is 187.50 euros a head with four aboard. At two hours it is the shortest tour on this page, so it suits a clear night better than a cloudy one.

If you want to drive

Take a snowmobile evening instead of a sightseeing tour. The four we list in Levi cost 145 to 159 euros a person, and they are compared on where they stop and how children come along in the aurora snowmobile evenings in Levi.

A group of your own

The private tours are priced per group and cover different maximum numbers of people, so the listed price says little on its own. What each costs per head, and the one that pays back half if the aurora never shows, are set out in private northern lights tours in Levi.

The four main formats side by side, with their prices, lengths and age limits, are in the northern lights in Levi. The rest of the resort is on the Levi destination page.

What each tour costs per hour, and the party size at which a private tour costs less than shared seats, is worked out in northern lights tour prices in Levi.

Which aurora evening takes a child of which age, from babies to twelve, and what a family of four pays, is set out in northern lights tours in Levi for families.

Questions people ask

Do I need a driving licence for an aurora snowmobile evening?

To drive, yes. Tokka Safaris asks for a driver of at least 18 with a valid B-category licence carried on the night, and Lovimainas asks for a driver of at least 18 with a physical licence accepted in Finland. Everyone else rides as a passenger: two people share each machine, and on Tokka's and Safartica's evenings children sit in a sledge or sleigh towed by the guide.

Are warm clothes included, or do we bring our own?

It depends on the tour, and it matters more on an evening spent standing still than on a ride. Safartica's campfire evening includes winter clothing, as do the snowmobile evenings run by Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park, Lovimainas and Tokka. Northern Lights Safaris' snow village evening lists winter clothing as not included, so dress for it yourself or rent before you go.

Can I book an aurora tour on my own?

Yes, but check the minimum. Arctic GM's group chase needs at least two participants to run, so a single booking can be called off if nobody else joins. On the snowmobile evenings two people share each machine, and the listings do not say how a single booking is paired, so ask the operator before you pay.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
