The short answer

For a family, the holiday village is the only seller whose fares let you add up the whole cost in advance: two adults and two children under twelve pay 380 euros on its shorter trip. The village company's 180 euros buys the most per trip, lunch and the permit included. Read the cancellation terms before booking: the village company refunds in full only up to seven days before.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest total the published fares allow. The family row is simple multiplication of each company's own fares and is left empty wherever a child fare is not printed in euros. The price row is not ranked, because one price has no stated basis.

Where these figures come from
  • Travel Utsjoki: The dearest short trip, and the one that says most about its price: lunch, clothing, helmet, sleigh and the permit are all named as included.
  • Valle, 2 to 3 hours: Clothing, the sleigh and a hot drink by the fire, with a printed fare for children under twelve, which makes a family total possible.
  • Valle, 3 hours: The same inclusions as the shorter trip for an extra hour, at a higher fare for adults and children alike.
  • Hotel Guossi: Overalls and transport by car or snowmobile from Karigasniemi, a price per person with no child fare, and the catch cooked in the restaurant.

The adult prices for ice fishing around Utsjoki sit between 90 and 185 euros. What sits behind each figure differs more than the figures do.

What the dearest short trip buys

The village company charges the most for a two-hour trip, and says why: the sleigh out, clothing and a helmet, a lunch at the lake and the fishing permit are all in the price. What its shop does not say is whether the figure is per person, and its terms take thirty per cent off for children under twelve.1

Where a family can add it up

The holiday village prints a child fare on all three of its fishing trips, so a family can know its total before writing to anyone.2 Its Thursday excursion is cheaper still per head and adds lunch and reindeer, but it needs four adults, so two parents with children cannot book it alone.

The trips themselves are compared on ice fishing in Utsjoki.

Questions people ask

What would the village company charge a family?

It does not print a child fare in euros. Its terms say children under twelve get thirty per cent off the prices, and its shop lists the ice-fishing trip at 180 euros without saying whether that is per person. Ask for a written total for your party before booking rather than working one out, because the basis of the 180 euros is exactly what the shop leaves unsaid.

Is the full day on the fells good value?

It depends on how many of you there are. It costs 740 euros for up to two guests and 117 for each further guest up to six, for six hours with a guide, lunch, clothing, permits and the wilderness licence. For two people that is far more than two places on a short trip; for six it works out much closer, since the flat part is shared.

Do the holiday village's terms let us cancel?

Its fishing pages print no cancellation terms. The booking terms on its site describe deposits and cancellation charges measured in weeks before arrival, which reads as written for accommodation rather than for a single activity. Ask the holiday village directly what applies to a fishing trip booked on its own, and get the answer in writing.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
