The short answer

A family with its own winter clothing pays least by booking the operator's own trip on Lake Pyhäjärvi, which has the lowest adult and child fares here. Pay more for a snowmobile trip from Luosto only if the snowmobile or the lent clothing is worth it to you, and take the petrol version unless the adults want the quieter machine. Ask the ranch for its child fare before comparing it.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest adult fare, lowest child fare, lowest price of an hour and lowest family total. Family totals assume two children within each trip's child age band. The ranch prints one price, so its family total cannot be worked out without asking.

Where these figures come from
  • Operator's trip, Pyhäjärvi: Two hours on Lake Pyhäjärvi with gear and warm drinks; bring your own winter clothing.
  • Ranch, Pyhäjärvi: Two hours on the same lake with a fire and snacks; no child fare printed on the listing.
  • Snowmobile, petrol: Three hours by snowmobile from Luosto with a thermal outfit, children riding behind the guide.
  • Snowmobile, electric: The same three hours with the adults on electric snowmobiles; children's fare unchanged.

On ice fishing, the child’s fare decides a family’s bill more than the adult’s does.

On Lake Pyhäjärvi

Kairankutsu sells a child’s ticket for about two thirds of its adult fare,1 while LuckyRanch prints no child fare at all.2

By snowmobile from Luosto

Lapland Safaris charges a child half the adult fare on the petrol trip,3 and the same child fare on the electric one, so only the adults pay for the quiet machine.4

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What does a child of two or three pay?

The snowmobile trips from Luosto have their own category for children of two and three, whose fare only appears once such a child is added in the booking form. The operator's own trip on Lake Pyhäjärvi sells a child's ticket from four and does not say whether a younger child can come.

What does the transport cost?

Neither trip on Lake Pyhäjärvi includes it. The operator charges 20 euros a person for transport on its other outings, and the ranch lists transport among what its price leaves out, so both expect you to drive or to pay for a transfer on top.

Can we get our money back if we do not catch anything?

No. None of the four promises a catch, and no listing offers a refund for an empty line. The ranch's trip can be cancelled free until a day before; the operator's own trip charges the full price within seven days; the Luosto trips charge 25 euros from eight days out and the full price from seven.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
