Can you see the northern lights in Oulu?

The short answer

Yes, on a fair share of winter nights, as long as it is dark and the sky is clear. You do not need to leave the city: a beach and two lakeshores within a few kilometres of the centre are dark enough. What you do need is a way home after the last bus, because the best hours start about when the beach bus stops running. Plan the return first, then go and look north.

Oulu sits about 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle,2 below Lapland. The aurora comes here often enough to be worth planning an evening around, and the city has something useful for it: dark shoreline within reach of a city bus.

How often

Visit Oulu puts it at about every fourth night during winter.1 The Oulu2026 organisation says the same in other words, about a quarter of nights, with the condition that matters most: as long as it is dark and there are no clouds in the sky.2

That is a real chance, not a rare event, and it is lower than further north. How the latitude compares with the other levers you control is set out in your best chance of the northern lights, ranked.

Where to stand

You do not need to leave town. Visit Oulu names Nallikari beach, 3.5 kilometres from the centre, Hollihaka park, a kilometre from the centre, and the shores of Pyykösjärvi and Kuivasjärvi near the university.1

The local photographer Thomas Kast gives the general rule: somewhere away from street lights, ideally a field, a meadow or a river, facing north.2 A beach on the sea does that with little effort.

The bus and the hour do not overlap

This is the practical catch. Bus 15 runs between the centre and Nallikari beach, usually until about ten in the evening, and the best time to look is usually between ten at night and two in the morning.1

So the bus can take you out for the start of the window and cannot bring you back from the best of it. Decide before you leave how you are getting home: a taxi, a walk you are happy to do in the cold, or a spot like Hollihaka that is close enough to walk from the start.

Oulu in 2026

Oulu is European Capital of Culture in 2026, and the programme includes an aurora project, Aurora Revelare, which combines exhibitions at the Tietomaa science centre with guided aurora outings around the region.2 For a visitor this winter, that means organised aurora outings on the programme as well as the usual tours.

Tours

Visit Oulu lists five tour providers, Majakka Outdoors, Lappis, Nallikari Safaris, Go Arctic and e-Coach, and Salamapaja for aurora photography tours.1 None of the prices are on that page. For a city this close to dark ground, the question to ask a tour is not whether it can find the aurora but what it does when the coast is under cloud.

What the tours sold on the booking platforms cost, and how they differ, is compared in northern lights tours in Oulu.

If you are further south, the comparison runs the other way: can you see the northern lights in Helsinki? is the page for the capital.

This page is an independent guide, written from published sources. We have no connection to any Oulu tour company.

Questions people ask

Is Oulu worth a night on the way north for the aurora?

As a bonus, yes; as the plan, no. A night in Oulu gives you a real chance on a clear evening and costs nothing extra if you are passing through anyway. But the odds rise the further into Lapland you go, and a trip built around the aurora is better spent adding nights there. Treat an Oulu evening as a free draw, and if the sky is clear and dark, go out rather than saving yourself for later.

How do we know whether tonight is worth going out for?

The same way as anywhere in Finland. Check the cloud first, because no aurora reading helps under overcast. Then look at the Finnish Meteorological Institute's local index for the station nearest your latitude once it is dark, rather than a planetary number on an app. The page on reading an aurora forecast walks through the layers and what each one can and cannot tell you about the next hour.

Do we need a tour in Oulu?

Not to see a display, because dark places are close to the centre. A tour earns its keep in two situations: when cloud covers the coast and a guide with a vehicle can look for a gap inland, and when you want someone to deal with the transport after the last bus. Visit Oulu lists five tour companies and a photography specialist without prices, so ask each what happens on a cloudy night before you book.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
